Unemployment remains one of South Africa’s most persistent challenges, but solutions don’t always have to come from national policy. Local communities have the power to drive meaningful change through targeted job creation initiatives. When communities are empowered, they not only uplift individuals but also contribute to broader economic development.
Long-term unemployment is more than a statistic—it’s a deeply personal and often isolating experience. For individuals out of work for months or even years, returning to the workforce can feel like an uphill battle. That’s why it
requires more than generic job ads and blanket training programs. It demands a targeted, compassionate, and strategic approach that addresses the unique challenges faced by those who have been unemployed for extended
periods.
Policy and regulation play a crucial role in job creation. With South Africa’s unemployment crisis deepening, the role of government becomes even more vital. Between January and April, 74,000 jobs were lost, and in
May alone, 141 companies were liquidated—a stark reminder of how urgent the situation is.
